Is this hassle-free travel not fun? Today we get to fly through the ethernet to So Cal to visit SewCalGal.

bar-2-logo

SewCalGal is all about spreading awareness. She says, “I love to find new products, books and notions that would be of interest to quilting, sewing and/or embroidery enthusiasts.” Does she ever! There’s a wealth of information on her blog. Have a great time poking around while you’re there.

This just in!

I’m flabbergasted to learn that I have been nominated for a SewCalGal Golden Quilter Award! In two categories! Seriously, somebody nominated me as best teacher/instructor and as best author. Oh how I thank you, whoever that was!

While you’re at SewCalGal, you can vote for me if you think the instructions in my books are the best ever :) (and you can vote for all the other nominees). Click on Golden Quilter Awards. There are prize drawings for voting; the rules are at the bottom, before the comments.

Off we go to Day 4 of Book-A-Round 2!

We’re going to have a fantastic time on our virtual book tour, starting in Georgia and making stops across the country to California, up the west coast and eastward across Canada, and ending our tour in North Carolina. But, no plane tickets, no driving to the airport, full body scans, rental cars or continental breakfasts! The power of the blog!

Why “2”, you may ask? The first Book-A-Round was in celebration of Easy Appliqué Blocks. This time around we’re showing off its followup, Inspired by Tradition.

If you’d like to hear my dulcet tones (that’s a joke) then click over to Pat Sloan’s Creative Talk Network at 4:00 p.m. Eastern time to listen to the live broadcast. The first guest is designer Vanessa Christenson of V and Co. My segment will start at approximately 4:30 p.m. That’s Eastern time, so remember to adjust for your time zone.

Part of the fun of my talk with Pat will be giveaways of my new book Inspired by Tradition. Follow Pat’s information on how to enter the drawing on her blog. (BTW the program will be taped and if you miss it live, you can always listen to it later.)

Last fall I was hanging out in my cozy little booth at a quilt show. An attendee came in, looked around, and said, “Oh, it’s more of that crappliqué.”

Well, she had a nice spirit about her and the way she said it was funny, so that actually made me laugh.

We started chatting and I asked her why she felt that way about appliqué. She told me that she had taken a class and had hated the process and the result. During our conversation I told her that there’s not just one way to appliqué and she just hadn’t found the way that suited her best. She agreed with that philosophy, and promised to give it another go.

I hope I helped this nice gal be more receptive to our polarizing pastime. What do you say to fellow quilters who have experienced frustration with appliqué?

Until next time,
Kay

•10-day blog hop, Book-A-Round 2, March 22-31.

This morning I got up and did the happy dance.

For me this looks like jumping up and down while doing the twist. I am not normally much of a morning person, especially before coffee, but I was celebrating the fact that today is the official publication day for Inspired by Tradition: 50 Appliqué Blocks in 5 Sizes!

Some more very cool news: Pat Sloan has invited me to be a guest on her Creative Talk Radio show on March 21! That should be so fun, as Pat is a relaxed, outgoing person and totally easy to talk to. There will be giveaway goodness associated with this event, so be sure to mark your calendars.

The next day, I’m kicking off Book-A-Round 2, a 10-day tour visiting other quilting bloggers. Each one will feature something a little different about Inspired by Tradition. More giveaway goodness, as a copy of the book will be offered in a drawing at each stop of the tour. Mark your calendars for March 22-31, and stay tuned for more information.

Last night Brown came and delivered the most beautiful book. I’m holding it in my hands, I see my name on the cover, and I can hardly believe it’s mine!

kays-inspired-by-tradition

It’s been just over a year since I was given the green light from That Patchwork Place for this new book. I’ve blogged about the process a little bit from time to time. (If you look at the Categories in the left-hand sidebar you can click on ‘A story of another book’ to read those posts if you like.)

Inspired by Tradition: 50 Appliqué Blocks in 5 Sizes is presented in the same format as Easy Appliqué Blocks, my first book from TPP… 50 blocks shown in a thumbnail library so you can choose your block, and a CD that you stick into your computer, choose any one of 5 sizes, and print right at home! No figuring of percentages or folding, copying, and matching back up crooked sections! We even give reversed versions of each pattern, since you need that for some forms of appliqué.

The designs in this new book are all vintage and old-timey in look and feel, hence the name Inspired by Tradition. The publishers did an amazing job on the pages within… graceful, colorful, and pretty, and so well suited for showing off these blocks with traditional appeal. I couldn’t be happier with how it looks.

In addition to the blocks, there’s a Little Gallery of Ideas to get you thinking. We’ve included the dimensions of all the blocks, sashing, borders, etc. in case you’d like to make something similar. There are also extensive illustrated instructions for back-basting hand appliqué and raw-edge fusible machine appliqué, and a section of appliqué questions and answers compiled from what quilters talk about when they come into my booth at shows.

What I have right now is my advance copy. The book ships to quilt shops March 7. It’s available for pre-order on Amazon now, and at a great price too. And, if you go look at it on Amazon and click on ‘see all product images,’ you can see all 50 of the blocks! That’s right, the publisher uploaded beautiful images of all 50 blocks, stitched by moi!

If you’d like to wait for a copy signed by me, I’ll have it on my website March 7 as well.

Thank you for taking a look at my new baby. I’m just a little bit excited. :)

Until next time,
Kay

Yesterday afternoon, Brown came rumbling in and delivered the “first pages” of my upcoming book from That Patchwork Place. This was right on schedule so, unlike last time, no new gray hairs were added to my head!

whig rose3First pages are like galley proofs, where the author gets to see the book laid out for the first time (instead of the words being separate from the illustrations being separate from the photos). It’s quite an exciting and nervous time for an author. Just as before, the tyvek envelope and its super gumglue defeated me, and I called the DH for scissors. Finally into the package, I took out the contents and glimpsed the cover. O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!” It is sooooooo beautiful. White with colorful blocks and a lovely typeface for the title.

And that title is now official! I’m pleased to announce that Inspired by Tradition: 50 Appliqué Blocks in 5 Sizes is due out in March 2011! It’ll have the CD with it just like Easy Appliqué Blocks, so you can print the patterns in the size you want. As soon as I get the go-ahead from the publisher, I’ll show you the cover!

I couldn’t be more pleased with the name. As you may know, in traditional publishing the author does not have decision power over the title and things like that. I’m so happy — this was one of my first choices. It describes perfectly the intent of the blocks. Not necessarily exact renditions of traditional appliqué blocks, nevertheless they’re all inspired by that vintage look and feel.

Now I have to settle back to earth, find a good editing pen, and get to work.

Happy dancin’,
Kay

Believe it or not, this is gonna be a book.

gonna-be-book

I’m not doing a whole “Journey to a book” series like I did last time, but I thought you might like to hear a little bit about this one as it goes along.

My eyes have been rolling in different directions as I get everything together for an April 2 deadline. That’s the day that things are due for my second book with That Patchwork Place.

Here we have a manuscript, a photo list, an illustration list, author guidelines, my first book to refer back to, my upcoming schedule, suggestions for book design, cover design, and title, and a blurb. These are just some of the materials, not including, say, the blocks themselves.

Coordinating the manuscript, the photo list, and the illustration list seems like it would be easy, but what’s easy is getting off track when things are in three different places and tied together only by numbers. Heaven forbid you should change your mind and move a photo or an illustration to a different part of the manuscript, Then you have to renumber it and everything else that comes after it. Right now, some things are held in place on the lists with repositionable sticky tape, just in case!

I’m trying to get everything ready to go a few days early, because I’m off to another event the weekend after this, the Quilt, Craft, and Sewing Expo in San Mateo oops, Sacramento. Hope to see you there, if you’re in the neighborhood!

Until next time,
Kay
