Greetings! It’s Day 1 of the 100 Blocks Volume 6 blog hop!

I’m Kay Mackenzie, a designer and author in Santa Cruz, California. My website is By Kay Mackenzie, which has all of my books and patterns on it, plus select notions for the appliqué enthusiast. If this is your first time visiting my blog All About Appliqué, you are very welcome! If you’re a regular reader or you’ve been here before for one of these hops, welcome back!

This time around my block, Sleep Tight, is a whimsical combination of piecing and appliqué. An old-timey patchwork quilt is tucked into a comfy bunk just waiting for someone to snuggle in and dream away under a star-filled indigo sky.

You can click on the photo to bring up a larger version.

As you can see, the more fabrics the merrier, so this is a great chance to pull out your scrap bag. I used raw-edge fusible machine appliqué, but of course you can use any form of appliqué you like. It’s all good!

You could customize this design by making the background look like wallpaper.

Then decorate the wall with ornaments of your own choosing!

There are 99 more bottles of beer charming and delightful quilt blocks in Volume 6, something for everyone. The publishers are offering a free copy of the magazine to a lucky winner! So if you’d like to win one, leave a comment here on this post before 7:00 p.m. California time on Sunday, November 11.

Thanks a million for visiting, enjoy the hop! Be sure to start each day this week at Quilty Pleasures.

Then on Monday it’ll be my day on the 100 Blocks Blog Hop. The hop continues all week so be sure to check it out.

Anybody up for some old-school, not-quick-and-easy, very detailed, completely captivating holiday appliqué?

Then I have just the thing for you! Santa’s Loading Dock Quilt by Mary Buvia is this month’s featured book, courtesy of AQS Publishing.

Wow! What a quilt! You can see a closer photo of it on Mary’ website. This is a masterpiece, and accordingly Mary was awarded Master Quilter status by the American Quilters Society.

The book gives you all the patterns and information you’d need to recreate the entire jolly scene; however, Mary encourages you to use whatever smaller elements from it that you like to make a smaller quilt or decorate other projects.

Mary’s appliqué method involves double freezer-paper templates, starch, and glue to create prepared-edge pieces for hand appliqué. The book also gives information for raw-edge machine appliqué if that’s what you prefer.

Many of the templates are given full size; however, some of them you’ll need to enlarge 200%.

So, who’s itching for some exceedingly cute holiday stitching? If you’d like to win this book, please leave a comment by 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 1. Open to U.S. and Canada mailing addresses only.

Holiday cheers,
Kay

P.S. I’ll be in Lodi, California, this weekend for the Tokay Stitch ‘n Quilt Guild show. This is a lovely show put on every other year, and the ladies serve a delightful afternoon tea for all!

Over at Quiltmaker they’re going to town with the 100 Blocks series. A new volume of this special issue comes out every six months. I was delighted to learn that I have a block in the upcoming Volume 6. It’s always so much fun!

Here’s a sneak peek of the cover.

There’ll be a blog hop to celebrate the release of Volume 6 from November 5-9. To follow the hop, start each day at the Quiltmaker blog, Quilty Pleasures, and they’ll send you off to visit the designers. There are lots of prize-winning opportunities along the way. My day is Monday, November 5, so stay tuned!

Until next time,
Kay

Home for a few days. It was great meeting some of you in Sonora, Portland, and San Mateo. It’s always so meaningful to me to hear that you enjoy the blog.

Next stop, the Simi Valley Quilt Guild show!

Now for this month’s featured appliqué book!

The National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Kentucky sponsors an annual contest and exhibit called “New Quilts from an Old Favorite.” The winning quilts are published in a book and I have the latest one, Baskets!

The top winner and cover quilt is Book Plate I by Karen Grover of Rockford, Illinois. I absolutely love the art nouveau bookplate-inspired appliqué design.

To quote from editor Linda Baxter Lasco in the preface,

While preservation of the past is one of a museum’s primary functions, its greatest service is performed as it links the past to the present and the future.

Created both to acknowledge our quiltmaking heritage and to recgonize innovation, creativity, and excellence, the contest challenges today’s quiltmakers to interpret a single traditional quilt block in a new and exciting work of their own design.

The book features the quilts of five award winners plus 14 additional finalists. What I really like about this book is that it features not only the quilts but the quiltmakers and their respective processes. It’s fascinating to learn what each quilter was thinking, and see original sketches and inspiration, design problems and solutions, and techniques both new and old described in the quilters’ own words.

Second place was Basket Case by Leona Harden of New Tazewell, Tennessee.

Basket Case by Leona Harden

One of the finalists was Spinning Baskets by Theresea Reeves of Oberlin, Kansas.

Courtesy of the publisher, the American Quilters Society, I can offer this beautiful book to give away in a drawing. If you’d like to win Baskets: New Quilts from an Old Favorite, leave a comment here on the blog before 7:00 p.m. on Monday, October 8. Contest open to U.S. and Canada mailing addresses only.

I cannot stress this enough: If you are reading this as an email right now,

All About Appliqué is not a newsletter, or an email. It’s a blog, and you’re subscribed to get the content of the posts delivered to you in the form of an email. The reader who came up the winner of Needleturn Appliqué: The Basics and Beyond is… No. 63, Judy G.! Congratulations! Judy says that she is very excited, both at receiving the book and because she never wins anything. Now you did! You will find a wealth of information about hand appliqué within the pages of this gorgeous book. Enjoy.

Thank you so much to everyone who included nice words about my own books and appliqué instructions. That gave me smiles.

For me, August was a time to regroup. I had no shows on my schedule and no major project to be pushing ahead with. I made a list as long as my arm of things to catch up on and get done during this window of opportunity, and I whittled away at it all month. Here are just a few of the more major items on the list.

• Reprinted Teapots 2 to Appliqué. Yay, its 4th printing!
• Caught up on Show & Tells. If you like teapots, cats, or dolls, be sure to go see the recent spate of lovely projects over at Kay’s Show & Tell Center.
• Sewed curtains for my sewing room, shabby chic ones made from a beloved old floral sheet that doesn’t fit our new bed. According to Dana, Max had “taken down” the old ones.
• Made pillowcases out of the leftover sheet fabric using Quiltmaker’s free pillowcase pattern.
• Did a major revamp on our back patio.
• Printed a bazillion patterns and ordered plenty of stock for upcoming shows.
• Prepped about a year’s worth of door prizes.
• Updated the Events pages on my website and here on the blog.
• Booked hotels for upcoming shows. There are a lot of them.
• Played with foster kittens.

It was a good thing I had August “off,” because September to early October is going to be a bear. A warm fuzzy bear, but a big old bear just the same. I have shows four weekends in a row. Here’s where I’ll be in the next little while.

Sept 15-16, 2012
Sierra Quilt Guild Show
I had a lovely time last year at this show in historic Sonora, California, and I’m looking forward to my return visit! All the details are at www.sierraquiltguild.com.

Sept 20-22, 2012
Northwest Quilting Expo
I’m not even coming home in between, but heading straight up to Portland, Oregon for my first time at this big show. Hope to see you there! All the details are at www.nwquiltingexpo.com.

Sept 29-30, 2012
Quilting by the Bay
I’ll be home for a few days, then I won’t have far to travel to this show put on by the Peninsula Quilters Guild in San Mateo, California. The guild has lots of fun activities planned, including a kids’ treasure hunt, demonstrations, and raffle basket opportunities. All the details are at www.PeninsulaQuilters.org.

Oct 6-7, 2012
Simi Valley Quilt Guild Show
Back to southern California! The theme of this year’s show, held in Simi Valley, is “Celebrate.” The guild website is www.simivalleyquiltguild.org.

I’m ready… I think… let me just go check that list…

Kay

Oooh, I’ve been waiting to get my paws on this one!

Back at Spring Market in Kansas City, I attended author Angela Lawrence‘s Schoolhouse presentation, because I’m always interested to hear what other appliqué enthusiasts have to say. Angela has been teaching hand appliqué for many years, and for her new book she’s broken down every step and laid it out in a beautiful visual guide. As she made her way through her presentation, I was like, “Check, check, that’s the way I do it, check, awesome.” With one exception, which is our placement method, Angela and I are “like this” when it comes to hand appliqué.

I spoke with Angela after the presentation, and she was delighted to hear that I wanted to feature her beautiful new book on the blog. But guess what? The copy she had in her hand was the only one in captivity! It was an advance copy and the book wasn’t even out yet!

Later in the weekend I stopped by the Landauer booth and made the acquaintance of E.B., the digital marketing person. She was also very happy to have the book featured once it came out. I gave her my card but afterward realized I hadn’t written my email address on the back for her. Argh! Since then I’ve been pondering the best way to follow up. Excelsior! I got an email from E.B. asking for my address so she could send me the book! Thank you Landauer!

I’d show you some more images, and tell you what-all’s in the book, but Landauer has gone to all the trouble, so just click on over to their website and watch the short video! Let me add that there’s a packet of full-size templates inside the back cover for the nine projects.

I have a copy of the book to give away to a lucky reader. If you’d like to enter the drawing, leave a comment at the bottom of this post before 7:00 p.m. California time on Wednesday, September 5.

Contest open to U.S. and Canada mailing addresses only. Remember that you can’t enter the drawing from your email program. You have to be on the blog itself on the internet to leave a comment.

Good luck everyone!

The winner of Fuss-Free Machine Appliqué is Glynis B. of Duncan, British Columbia. Congratulations Glynis! Enjoy the book.

Glynis sent me a photo of herself with my book Inspired by Tradition. How sweet! I was so glad to hear that she is enjoying my designs.

On to the This and That. There’s a Pets on Quilts show going on right now, hosted by Lilypad Quilting. This internet quilt show features real pets on quilts, pets depicted on quilts, or any combination thereof, so what a happy topic. Joanna, who blogs at Needle Thread Happiness, used two of the cat patterns from my book Easy Appliqué Blocks to depict her gorgeous black cat Moxie. And in the post Moxie herself inspects the results LOL!

Joanna also shows her very cute version of Lollipop Grove (the cover quilt for Scrap-Appliqué Playground) with a little dog frolicking in the trees. What a great idea! Thank you Joanna, for including my patterns in your Pets on Quilts entry. I really enjoyed them.

I got a nice little surprise while I was in Long Beach… the Martingale blog Stitch This! did a feature on different ways to label your quilts, and lo and behold up popped the information I included in Scrap-Appliqué Playground on how I make labels. There are lots of other great ideas too so be sure to check it out.

And I was honored to hear from Dorothy Sparks that she had made a small quilt using the Eagle block from Inspired by Tradition to donate to the Alzheimer’s Art Quilt Initiative August 2012 Online Auction. Dorothy had contacted me and the publisher earlier for permission to use the pattern, and it came out just wonderful. It’s Number 10546, “Proud to Be an American.”

Random.org has declared that the winner of Janet Pittman’s Appliqué: The Basics & Beyond is… Number 3, Melody!

Melody says that this book will be perfect since she is just learning how to do applique, and she’s very excited. Welcome to appliqué, Melody!

I must apologize for stating that the contest ended Friday, June 7. As they say on TV, I can explain! You see, I’m calendar-challenged. My whole life I have never been able to wrap my head around the fact that calendars split the weekend and put Sunday at the beginning. It’s a deep-seated conceptual thing that I’ve never overcome. So, just for the future, if my day and date don’t line up, go by the day, not the date LOL! I looked at the end of the week, which to me is Friday, and it said 7.

You remember during our recent Book-A-Round that Erin Russek was turning her darling appliqué design into a pattern? She named it Miss Kay and I feel very highly honored. You can check out Miss Kay in Erin’s Etsy shop. Thank you Erin! It’s not every day that one is immortalized in a gorgeous appliqué pattern.

Until next time,
Kay

At Spring Market in May, I stopped by the Landauer booth to find out more information about one of their upcoming appliqué titles.

I happened to speak with the right person! The staff member in charge of digital marketing was thrilled at the prospect of sharing their appliqué titles with All About Appliqué and handed me a couple to peruse.

One of them was Janet Pittman‘s Appliqué: The Basics and Beyond. I sat down and looked all the way through through the book. It’s fantastic, and I was presented with a copy to take home in my suitcase. Thank you, Landauer!

Janet has really done a comprehensive job of presenting information about appliqué… several kinds. After a section on equipment and supplies, we’re on to the preparing, stitching, and embellishing! There’s paper-backed fusible-web, turned-edge with template and starch, turned-edge with freezer paper and glue, turned-edge with freezer paper on the wrong side and also the right side, faced appliqué, marked-line and thread-basted, you name it, Janet has covered it. And it’s all beautifully photographed and illustrated for you.

One of the really cool things about the book is that it’s spiral-bound inside a hardback cover so it lays flat. What a nice convenience.

The subtitle of the book is, “The Complete Guide to Successful Machine and Hand Techniques with Dozens of Designs to Mix and Match.” In addition to all that appliqué information, there are a bunch of projects with complete instructions. There’s even an index in this comprehensive resource.

If you’d like to win Appliqué: The Basics and Beyond, please leave a comment here on the blog before 7:00 p.m. on Friday, July 7.

Please pay close attention to the following. There are always a few who don’t understand how to leave a comment.

If you receive this blog post in your email, replying to that email will not enter you in the drawing. You’ll need to click on the title of the post, which will take you to All About Appliqué on the internet. Scroll to the bottom and leave your comment there. Open to U.S. and Canada mailing addresses only.

Good luck!

Cheers,
Kay

Our Scrap-Appliqué Playground blog tour has concluded. Sigh. I don’t know about you, but I had blast and a half. Most of the time I had not seen what the other bloggers were up to and it was a huge thrill each day to discover the wonderful things that had arisen from their creativity.

I hope you’ve been having a fabulous time on our 10-day tour. I sure did! Weren’t the other bloggers fantastic? A big shout-out to all the gals who played in the Playground to bring us such great inspiration.

Most of the other bloggers have been showcasing the piecing methods in the book, so I thought I’d give you a peek at the fusing method. I call it “Lay Down and Fuse,” because that’s what you do… lay down pre-fused scraps and stick them together to create spontaneous fabric compositions.

This is the project Imaginary Blooms from the book. My husband refers to this one as “Psycho Flowers” LOL. He’s having a hard time getting used to it, I think because it’s just so different than what he’s seen come out of my studio for the last 20 years. Personally I love it, because it’s so NOT me :). I had a blast cutting loose with these blooms from my imagination.

Since I made a blue spiral flower for Imaginary Blooms, I decided to do one in a different color. Hmmm, how about red. I dumped out my bag of red scraps and started casting about for inspiration. A pretty red-and-white floral caught my eye. That’s it! All red-and-white, all the time! I rummaged and pulled out all the scraps and strips that fit the description. I also looked through my tub of reds and pulled one more fabric. (We’re allowed to do that, you know. And besides, I love rummaging.)

Right now this looks like a hot mess.

In addition to fabric scraps, pull out those odd little pieces of leftover paper-backed fusible that you’ve been saving.

SoftFuse is my current favorite.

Now I’ve pressed and pre-fused the scraps, and given them a fresh scissor-cut all the way around.

I traced a freezer-paper template from the pattern in the book, scribbling inside it so I could more easily tell the positive space from the negative space. It will serve as both a cutting template and a sizing template.

Spontaneously and without overthinking it, lay down the pre-fused scraps slightly overlapping on a nonstick pressing sheet. The composition is large enough for the template. (And I didn’t even need that fat quarter.)

A quick flower center, and here it is, ready to fuse and stitch! So quick, and what fun! Scrap-Appliqué Playground takes you through the process in full detail.

Courtesy of Martingale, I have a copy of the book to give away. If you’d like to enter the drawing, please leave a comment here on this post before 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 17. Tell me what you enjoyed most about the Book-A-Round!

Heads up: If you’re subscribed by email, you can’t leave a comment by hitting the “Reply” button. Go to All About Appliqué on the internet and add your comment there, at the bottom of the post. Contest open to U.S. and Canada mailing addresses only.

Good luck, and thank you all so very kindly for coming along on this journey with me.

Cheers,
Kay

There are some awesome quilters in Hollister, among them one of the most talented illustrators I’ve ever seen. Holly Mabutas of Eat Cake Graphics has a thriving rubber-stamp business in addition to being an appliqué designer with some of the cutest patterns in the business.

Holly and her gorgeous collie mix, Tucker.

Holly recently teamed up with quilting mystery writer Terri Thayer on a a unique eight-month web-based series that includes a block of the month plus a story of the month. How fun! It’s called Tales of the Quilt Shop.

Let’s go see what Holly has been up to in the Scrap-Appliqué Playground, and good luck in the drawing!

Maria is editor-in-chief of the fabulous on-line Quilt Pattern Magazine. She also runs the website Quilts For Sale, so if you’d like to buy or sell a quilt, be sure to check that out.

So click on over to Mississauga, just across the border from Buffalo and Niagara Falls, for a visit with Maria, who’s been playing in the Playground! My favourite (note the Canadian spelling :) ) quote from her post is “You’ll have great fun while virtuously using your scraps.” Good luck in the drawing for a copy of Scrap-Appliqué Playground!
