Greetings! It’s Day 1 of the 100 Blocks Volume 5 blog hop!

I’m Kay Mackenzie, a designer and author in Santa Cruz, California. My website is By Kay Mackenzie, which has all of my stuff on it. If this is your first time visiting my blog All About Appliqué, you are very welcome! If you’re a regular reader or you’ve been here before, I’m glad you’re back!

It’s so much fun to have a block in these very special magazines. Here’s a little backstory for my design.

When I was a newlywed living in Ohio, three little kittens followed us home one day. They stayed for 18 years.

Maikai was the beauty of the family, a striking calico with big round eyes.

During those long years my husband and I learned a lot about cats and what they know to be true. We compiled a list of Cat Caveats, such as:

• If there is a piece of paper anywhere in a room, it must be sat upon.

• Loose objects need moving around.

• What’s on the other side of a door is not interesting until the door is closed.

There are many more, including the fact that bags, boxes, baskets, and any other type of open containers are there for the sole purpose of being climbed into by a cat.

When it came time to design a block for Volume 5 of Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks, I started with this silhouette of Maikai…

… and sat her in a basket.

And here it is, Block #410!

I used hand appliqué for this one, but of course you can use your own favorite method.

Below is another example I stitched up using fusible web and a small machine blanket stitch. I thought it would be fun to play with feedsack-y and 30s type fabrics.

Came out pretty cute!

In the following alternate version I was going for sort of a porcelain figurine look. One of the most fun things about quilting is that you can make your block look so many different ways with just the choice of fabrics!

Be sure to follow the blog tour all week, through May 4. There are multiple bloggers participating each day, with lots of prize-winning goodness at every turn. Start out at Quiltmaker and they’ll send you on your way.

I have a copy of Volume 5 to give away! To enter my drawing, leave a comment at the bottom of this post before 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 2. You don’t have to be a cat person :). There are 99 other varied and wonderful blocks to choose from!

I’ll also draw a second winner, who will receive my book Growing Hearts to Appliqué.

Best of luck to everyone!

Cheers,
Kay

We gave shelter to a calico kitten several years ago and she gave us 4 more kittens..as a thank you, I think. I would love to have either of your give-aways, but the kitten block block is the best!!

  13. Mary Ann @ RocknQuilts on April 30th, 2012 4:32 am

My very first cat was a calico who had kittens in the bush in front of our farmhouse. I was about five or six years old and remember it like yesterday! This is a great block – I wonder if I could find calico cat fabric? I would name the quilt “Patches”, after my first cat.

  92. Lisa on April 30th, 2012 10:32 am

I really like the blocks with the applique. It gives it a different look. I also think you are right on when you talk about cats. If there is something for them to climb in they are going to do it. If there is something for them to move the will do that too. They can be very fun to have around and a lot of company. I like the way you came up with the idea for the block.

  93. Gail on April 30th, 2012 10:34 am

I’m a cat person also and I just love this pattern. I also own three of your books. Hope I win.

  115. Chris Huff on April 30th, 2012 12:55 pm

  116. robin on April 30th, 2012 12:56 pm

I love your block. Our calico mama cat, Lily, gave birth to 5 kittens about 2 weeks ago. I was happy to see a calico in the litter, but it’s interesting – instead of black as one of her colors like Lily, she’s gray, orange and white. Kit Kat, the tom, is gray so I guess that’s why. :)

  117. Carrie P. on April 30th, 2012 12:56 pm

that is so neat that your cats were your inspiration for your very cute blocks. I love this magazine. I have them all from the beginning.

  118. Jan Beam on April 30th, 2012 12:59 pm

Love cats and for some reason the old 1950’s melody came to mind when I looked at this block. Here goes ….
How much is that kitty in the basket,
The one with the beautiful eyes.
How much is that kitty in the basket,
    I sure hope that I win a prize ……

  119. Judy on April 30th, 2012 1:03 pm

That would be a fun block to incorporate into a quilt.

  120. Vickie on April 30th, 2012 1:05 pm

  124. Mary on April 30th, 2012 1:23 pm

Love the cat block. I want to make one for a friend whose cat does exactly that- sits in any basket around. She especially like the smaller fruit baskets. Problem is Tipper is over 20 pounds now.

  125. Terry H. on April 30th, 2012 1:24 pm

Love you cat block! I am a cat person, but not so much applique, but I may just have to give this block a try! Too Cute. Thanks.

  126. Mimi Colwell on April 30th, 2012 1:24 pm

Your cat caveats are so true. Love the block, thank you.

  127. kwiltnkats on April 30th, 2012 1:24 pm

Cute Maikai. Curious what names you came up with for the other two. I’m a cat person too and love how you’ve recreated your kitty in the basket. Thanks for the opportunity to win. Sandi

  128. Nancy Chaddick on April 30th, 2012 1:32 pm

We had a Maine Coon cat for 18 years and also have a bunch of “cat” sayings = Kitty loved my fabric stash and would burrow into the drawers if I left even the tiniest space. I adore your kitty pattern – think one or two of the granddaughters would enjoy a quilt with this kitty in it. Thank you!

  129. Sandra on April 30th, 2012 1:32 pm

I am a cat lover and I love you block. Congratulations on being chosen for the newest 100 quilt blocks.

  137. Carina on April 30th, 2012 2:13 pm

    Hi
I am a cat person, have 6 felines lying around the house. I also have a suit case full of cat fabric. I can just imagine making your pattern in those fabrics:)

  138. Moira McSpadden on April 30th, 2012 2:18 pm

Love your story about your sweet calico, and the block you designed from her picture!

  139. Marge in Louisiana on April 30th, 2012 2:23 pm

  142. Madeline on April 30th, 2012 3:23 pm

OH, I love that cat in the basket! I have a stuffed rooster that I sit in an empty basket, and call it “chicken in a basket”. I would love to make that block in a quilt or just as a wall hanging.

  143. Sher Stiles on April 30th, 2012 3:27 pm

I absolutely love your cat basket. It reminds me of the 3 cats that used to call my house home. We had two boys and a little girl and I can see all of them sitting in a basket if not boxes. Definitely will get the magazine just to have that block. Thanks so much for sharing your talent.

  144. Cheryl on April 30th, 2012 3:38 pm

Love the applique! And my 4yo son just peeked over my shoulder and wanted to see if there was another basket with an elephant in it:-)

Thanks for the chance to enter your giveaway. The machine applique stitch is so very tiny. You are a very talented quilter – congratulations on being selected for QM 100 blocks v5.

  150. June Cowles on April 30th, 2012 4:49 pm

This is a beautiful block. I love the porcelain cat! I have only tried applique twice in 15 years. This block is one that I would like to try!

  151. ellen on April 30th, 2012 4:53 pm

I am a cat person too. My oldest adoptee was 20. My current one has been with us 7 years so far and she must’ve been at least a year old when she found us. Over here, “Maikai” means “good”, “fine”, “very well”. Good name! Great block!

  152. Joan Trautwein on April 30th, 2012 4:55 pm

The block is so sweet and it does say “this is what I’m good at”–looking adorable. Only have a grandcat now–our 18 yr old stray, all black, sweet lady has passed on. She couldn’t get up the bottom porch step, she was so tiny. I do miss her along with our 14 yr old adopted Jack Russell. Sigh! Would love to win this. Thank you for the chance.

  153. Judy on April 30th, 2012 4:57 pm

I am very much a cat person so I love your block and liked seeing the pictures of Maikai

  160. Jill on April 30th, 2012 6:10 pm

  161. jmniffer on April 30th, 2012 6:12 pm

Fun block. I’m new to applique but willing to give it a try. Thanks for the chance at your giveaway.

  162. Tricia on April 30th, 2012 6:14 pm

Wow…. now there are 2 things that seem to go hand & paw. Cats & Quilts seem to be almost a requirement for all Quilters. I can’t wait to play with your wonderful block. And I just drooling over you second prize of “Growing Hearts by Applique”. I have discovered that I rather enjoy applique and would love to add your book to my anemic book collection. Congrats on your block making the magazine and thank you for the chance to win.

  163. Diantha Howard on April 30th, 2012 6:15 pm

I am a cat person and I liked your block of the cat in the basket. I particularly liked how different it looked with different fabrics!

  169. Marcai on April 30th, 2012 7:17 pm

My furry friend Tommy and and I love your block. I have just begun using applique and am still learning. Your pattern will be a good one as I learn.

  170. Nancy on April 30th, 2012 7:21 pm

I am not a great cat lover but I really like the alternative block – the fabric choices are great and the idea is wonderful for friends who love cats! Thanks.

  171. Charlene on April 30th, 2012 7:25 pm

Very nice block, makes me smile

  172. Cathryn on April 30th, 2012 7:30 pm

Love the Kitty block. I love cats and kittens and while I would love to have them, allergies don’t allow the furred kind. So I have to make do with other versions. This will be a definite block to make for me

  173. Cindy on April 30th, 2012 7:33 pm

What a cute cat block. I have several friends that are big cat lovers that I thought of when I saw this block. Congrats on being in the magazine.

  174. Deb T. on April 30th, 2012 7:48 pm

Sorry, I really wasn’t excited about your cat block. Cats make me sneeze and wheeze. I do like your color choices for your blocks, though.

  175. Cindi C on April 30th, 2012 8:05 pm

Love the block! We have 6 cats and you can’t leave anything laying around, but they have to sit on or in it. Too funny!

Congrats on being in the 100 Block issue

  176. Doris - The Quilting Queen on April 30th, 2012 8:12 pm

I’m not a cat lover at all but my 4 year old granddaughter would love it if Nana made her something with this cat on it.

  177. Donna m on April 30th, 2012 8:22 pm

I love baskets and my best friend loves cats. This may be my first applique project. Very cute!

  178. Linda (Petey) on April 30th, 2012 8:42 pm

Another animal lover here, but there is a dog at my feet when I’m sewing. Love seeing the way the fabric changes the block. Very nice.

  179. Joyce Mitchell on April 30th, 2012 8:45 pm

Love your cat applique. Your cat caveats are right on the money. Thanks for the chance to win.

  180. Angela N. on April 30th, 2012 8:47 pm

Im a kitty lover myself. I have the cat my mom got for us when i was 12… hes an old man now, but still going strong. The block is amazing! I love the idea you had!

  181. Tracy on April 30th, 2012 8:57 pm

Very cute & classic cat! I’ve got a few relatives and friends that might be getting this for Christmas. THANKS!!!

  182. Sherry Moran on April 30th, 2012 9:06 pm

This classy cat looks like a block I will do. I am learning to applique and a cat block will encourage me, ’cause I love cats! Thanks.

  183. Jen on April 30th, 2012 9:16 pm

Lovely kitty! The block, and especially the inspiration.

  184. Jennifer J on April 30th, 2012 9:21 pm

I do love your kitty. Thanks for the opportunity to win the book.

  185. Karen on April 30th, 2012 9:28 pm

Your cat is beautiful, just the kind that my daughter would love to have. Our cat is a very soft grey with a white tip on her tail. I enjoy the quiet needle work of hand applique, it’s my “stress buster”. But sometimes the cat would rather get my attention and will walk back and forth on my lap to get it.

  186. Debra Lee on April 30th, 2012 9:34 pm

    Definately my favorite block!

  187. Vickie on April 30th, 2012 9:53 pm

What a cute block! I love cats and baskets too.

  188. Karrie Smith on April 30th, 2012 9:58 pm

  189. Lindsay Mattison on April 30th, 2012 9:59 pm

I LOVE your beautiful little kitty in the basket! I’m not much of a cat person, but I do LOVE your block! Congrats!

  190. Diane Wagner on April 30th, 2012 10:17 pm

If I had an empty basket, one of my cats would be in it for sure. Love your block!

  191. Julie in WA on April 30th, 2012 10:55 pm

Your calico cat is stunning! Her colors are just perfectly situated! Your cat block is just so cute, love it in the reproduction fabrics!

  192. Annie on April 30th, 2012 10:56 pm

I’m not a big fan of applique (probably because I’m not very good at it), but the variations on your cat pattern may make me rethink my position!

  193. Binks on April 30th, 2012 11:05 pm

I’m not necessarily a cat person, but this block is super cute. I love the idea and would switch in a rabbit instead. My little bunny gets in absolutely everywhere and a basket is not stranger.

  194. Peach Rainbow on April 30th, 2012 11:21 pm

Congrats on your block and thanks for the chance :)

  195. Janet on April 30th, 2012 11:59 pm

Great block! I particularly like the porcelain version. My mother used to say “curiosity killed the cat” – I interpreted that as that the cat got closed in somewhere it was searching out and forgotten about. Sad story but cats are very curious.

  196. Deb on May 1st, 2012 2:12 am

I love your block. It is just so cute.

  197. Martha Raiford on May 1st, 2012 3:49 am

  208. Verna on May 1st, 2012 7:27 am

First time here, and as soon as I saw your beautiful cat block, and read the story I decided to leave a comment, which I haven’t been doing. I had 2 beautiful brothers for 14 years, and just said good-bye a month ago. I chuckled at the things you learned over those 18 years, they are so true. Cats are the so entertaining.

Can’t resist a kitty. Can’t wait to get home and make one of these.

  214. Gwen W on May 1st, 2012 8:21 am

  216. Joleen Graham on May 1st, 2012 8:23 am

  217. Michelle Harrison on May 1st, 2012 8:45 am

Great block! I could see a way to use some buttons on that little circle piece.

  218. April on May 1st, 2012 9:22 am

I love the way you took an everyday action of your cat and incorporated it into a quilt block. Wonderful!

My girls sure are cat people!
The fun thing about the 100 blocks is that there is something for everyone! Thanks for putting together a block and for the giveaway.

  227. Kristen on May 1st, 2012 10:53 am

That is adorable! One thing I always love about the 100 Blocks hops is that you lead in with so much backstory before getting to the block that it is so fun to see the reveal.

I spent my life dreading cats since we had a mean one when I was very small. This past Christmas, the kids talked me into getting one from a rescue shelter. It has been a crazy learning curve and I am teasing the cat people I know for not giving me all the “caveats” in advance! Sitting in things is definitely on that list and I can’t wait to make something from this block when I get a copy of the magazine.

Thanks for the chance to win!

  228. Patti on May 1st, 2012 11:13 am

    What a beautiful cat.

  229. PhyLLis on May 1st, 2012 11:34 am

My daughter and her family have 3 cats, and they’re always sitting in her decorative baskets, so your block just may be the start of a wallhanging for their new house! Can’t wait to get my hands on a copy of Volume 5 *Ü*

  230. Jamie on May 1st, 2012 11:45 am

I am not a cat person, but I like how you showed your block in different fabrics. Based on the picture, it looks like you captured you cat perfectly.

  234. Karen Heck on May 1st, 2012 12:48 pm

Love your designs and happy for you that you got in the magazine. I haven’t delved into applique yet, it’s definitely on my list of to-dos.

  235. JayneHonnold on May 1st, 2012 12:59 pm

Hello Kay, I am happy to meet you through the 100 Blocks Blog Tour. I randomly clicked on your blog because of your last name which happens to be my maiden name – McKenzie. Imagine my surprise when I learned that you once lived in Ohio! I’m a life-long resident here, and so are my ancestors! We could be related – now how about that??

I love applique, but an reluctant to do very much of it, as it intimidates me. I watched a woman demonstrate some really clever techniques at a recent quilt show in Cincinnati, and it was inspiring! I think I could learn to be more comfortable with applique if I just did it more.

Hoping I win something! I will continue to follow your blog.

  236. Margaret Vargas on May 1st, 2012 1:18 pm

We have a cat named Kate. She is getting along in years. I hope I don’t have to say goodby too soon. I love your block. Just the thing I need.

  237. Denise on May 1st, 2012 1:27 pm

That kitty block is so cute. I just found my cat sitting in the middle of dinette table on top of folded placemats. I guess he wants to be a centerpiece.lol

  238. Kat on May 1st, 2012 1:47 pm

Great block~ That bears a striking resembelance to our cat, Jiji! I would love to have the book. I have 3 of yours thus far and enjoy them all greatly. I do have to say the cds with the books has me totally spoiled.
    Thanks!

  239. Annie K on May 1st, 2012 2:12 pm

I love your block! My daughter’s cat is going on 15 yrs. We went to a pet store when she was young and before I could change directions, she had found her cat. I know she would love this block. I’m so glad there are lots of great applique blocks out. I love doing applique. Congratulations on having your block chosen to be included in Vol.5.

Thank you for a great giveaway and a chance to win.

We live with a tiny yorkie dog and a large calico cat. It is fun to watch them play in among my fabric, as I am planning a quilt. It is also fun having a cat much larger than the dog!

I just LOVE your Sitting Pretty block and caveats. I also have three cats so I could probably add at least one to your list: If you’re working on a quilt and put it down, a cat with sit on it. You could do an entire quilt on cats and their various positions. You should do one in a box!

  267. Nancysue on May 2nd, 2012 1:15 pm

Congrats on your block!!! Love it! This little kitty may be “Sitting Pretty” right now, but I can imagine it’s ready to bound out of the basket and get into some trouble. My 4 yr old son renamed your block “Mr. Snickers in His Time Machine”. Mr. Snickers was my father’s cat. I have no idea where the whole time machine comes into play:) Congrats again! It will on the top of my to do list of blocks from the magazine!

Hi Kay – I LOVE your blog!!!I love applique too! My mom taught me and my 3 sisters how to sew when we were in elementary school and I have been sewing ever since. I created my own “quilts” the way I thought looked right. Only last year, after all of my 5 children married, I took my first introduction to quilting class and made a sampler. Now I really DO know the right way and am loving trying these new skills. Piecing is so creative, but in my heart I LOVE APPLIQUE!!! I am taking a quilting class next week on the crayon tinting for quilts and also embellishing with embroidery – I’m SO excited. I am looking foward to catching up on your website and all of you blog posts – SO MUCH FUN AHEAD. I would love to be in the drawing too! Thank you for including me,
    Janet in sunny Texas
